Everyone, at some point in their lives, experiences some degree of hair loss. And whether it’s temporary or permanent, losing your hair is not an exciting prospect. You feel powerless to stop the phenomenon and thanks to social stigma, most people equate hair loss to a loss of beauty.
But social stigma aside, let’s say you want to grow out your hair just because you like having hair. With the right care and treatment, it’s totally possible!
Why Do We Lose Hair?
Before you start any type of treatment, try to ascertain the root cause of your hair loss. By doing this, you will be able to figure out how best to target the source of this issue and deal with it.
Here are a few reasons for hair loss:
- Genetics – Some people are more prone to hair loss due to their family history and the genetics handed down to them.
- Physical Stress – Sometimes, your hair growth cycle can be affected by any sort of physical trauma, like a car accident or some serious injury. This type of hair loss is called telogen effluvium and causes most of your hair to be pushed into the shedding phase of the hair cycle.
- Emotional Stress – Stressful events like the death of a family member or a divorce can trigger a response in your scalp causing hair to fall at an accelerated rate.
- Lack Of Protein – Hair is made up of protein, so it comes as no surprise that a lack of protein can lead to hair loss.
- Hormones – During pregnancy, women experience hormonal imbalances that can cause hair loss. Men also experience drastic hormonal changes that can lead to excess hair loss.
These are just a few of the reasons why people lose hair. Of course, nearly all the causes are reversible, or at least treatable and can be stopped in their tracks. You just need to find the right remedy to combat your thinning hair.
Sure, you can visit a hair specialist or doctor who will prescribe an expensive treatment that involves months of medication and massages. The only problem is, most of these hair clinics do not guarantee that your hair will grow back.
So instead of spending excess amounts of time and money at the clinic, why not use essential oils to treat your hair loss?
Which Essential Oil To Use for Hair?
If you search hard enough, you’ll realise that most essential oils are effective in stimulating hair growth and giving you a thicker head of hair.
However, a few of them are potent enough to stop hair loss and will even stimulate your scalp to grow thicker, more lustrous hair. And chief among these oils is cedarwood oil.
Cedarwood oil is highly beneficial to the circulatory system and causes blood to flow to the area to which it is applied. This makes it an excellent stimulant for hair growth, as it causes blood to rush to your scalp, speeding up the activity of your hair follicles.
Cedarwood oil also helps to reduce stress and tension in the scalp, freeing up your body and allowing the scalp to heal properly. This is vital to hair growth. Besides this, cedarwood essential oil also contains antibacterial and antiviral properties and destroys the dirt and germs on your head, allowing hair to grow freely.
How To Use Cedarwood Essential Oil for Hair Loss?
On it’s own, cedarwood essential oil is extremely potent, and it’s best you don’t apply it directly to your scalp. You‘ll need to dilute its potency with the help of some carrier oil to ensure that it is effective without damaging your scalp. Here are a few recipes to try out.
Cedarwood Oil Massage
Add 5 drops of cedarwood oil to 10ml of a carrier oil like coconut, black seed, arnica, or calendula oil. You want to shake this mixture well so the two oils blend together. Coconut and black seed oil are also extremely beneficial to hair growth, as they nourish the hair with much-needed nutrients, so it’s best you use these carrier oils instead of the other ones in the market.
Gently massage this mixture into your scalp. Remember, your scalp is where the hair grows from, so to stimulate the follicles you will need to massage the scalp and not your hair. Move your fingers in gentle, circular motions, all the while rubbing the oil into the scalp. Be sure not to press too hard and cause friction as that could damage the hair roots.
After a minute, hang your head down below your heart to increase blood flow to the head, and continue to massage your scalp. Leave the oil on your scalp for as long as possible, and if you can leave it on overnight, do so. Wash off the oil with a gentle shampoo.
Cedarwood, Rosemary, and Sage Hair Thickener
For this mix you will need:
- 1/10th of a litre of jojoba oil
- 1/10th of a litre of grapeseed oil
- 30 drops of cedarwood essential oil
- 30 drops of rosemary essential oil
- 30 drops of sage essential oil
Pour the jojoba and grapeseed oil into a jar and add the quantities of essential oils to the mix. Shake the jar vigorously once you’ve put on the lid, to allow the oils to blend together nicely.
Apply this solution on your head and massage the oil gently in concentric circles. You must apply this oil everyday or at least 3 times a week for best results. You can even leave it on your head overnight and wash it off in the morning. Just be sure to place a towel on your pillow to avoid staining it.
Cedarwood And Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse
For this recipe, you will need 3 drops of cedarwood oil and one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.
Simply mix these ingredients together in a bowl, and add them to the water that you use to rinse your hair after a shampoo. Apple cider vinegar is an excellent tonic and will help kill unwanted germs in your hair. Mix it up with cedarwood essential oil, and you have a highly-effective hair-growth rinse.
A Few Other Things To Bear In Mind
Cedarwood oil will definitely help hair recover, making it stronger and more lustrous. But you also have to remember to build a lifestyle that will help your hair grow a lot more effectively.
For this, you’ll have to cut down the daily stress you face. One way to do it would be to meditate everyday, as it will train your mind to block out unnecessary anxiety and tension.
You also need to watch your diet and eat plenty of protein and zinc as they help synthesise new hair. For this, you want to eat lots of beans, spinach, and flax seeds as they are rich in these nutrients. Get plenty of sleep and drink lots of water as this will give your body the rest and energy that it needs to regrow your hair.
Most of all, be patient. Hair growth takes time, and with the right treatment and a positive attitude, you’re sure to see results.
